NG01 CLUBS - ST GEORGES BASIN AND NOWRA DAY
PARTICIPATE IN LEARNING LINKS READING FOR LIFE PROGRAM
St Georges Basin and Nowra Day VIEW Clubs participated in this program again for 2008. The program is specifically for Year 2 children who have difficulty both in reading, but most importantly, lack the enjoyment of reading.
Sanctuary Point Public School in the Shoalhaven City was the chosen school and 10 children were enrolled in the program, receiving sessions from 5 dedicated VIEW members. Lesleigh Morley the President of St Georges Basin VIEW Club was one of these volunteers and spoke of her time with a young boy “Corey” who entered the room looking very apprehensive, but left with a new friend. Lesleigh spoke of the importance of being a helping hand that constantly encouraged, thus building confidence. Corey responded very well to the program, proudly bringing his book to school with a list of new words he had discovered.
Lesleigh spoke to Corey’s mother whose smile expressed thanks. She had tried to encourage Corey to read but he lacked the confidence to sound words or ask for help. Since attending the program he reads everything and always has a book in hand.
Corey is now a confident boy who knows that it is fine to ask if you don’t understand a word, and that Mum and Dad are there as well.
Lesleigh enjoyed the program, and expressed that the satisfaction gained as reading buddies made life worthwhile.
